Academic/Industry Experience

ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE:

  • Loyola University New Orleans (August 2005 – Present). Associate Provost for Teaching, Learning and Faculty Development; Chase Minority Entrepreneurship Distinguished Professor of Management. Following offices report to Assistant Provost position:  Center for International Education, Office of Grants and Research, Office of Graduate Education, Office for Nontraditional Students, Women’s Studies, and Whelan Child Care Center.  Initiatives currently underway include (1) development of Online Segment for all existing courses as part of overall disaster preparedness effort, (2) implementation and oversight of SACS Quality Enhancement Plan, (3) development of new Academic Resource Center to coordinate and centralize services for students.  Accomplishments while in this position include working from Houston to reopen the university campus in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, participating in the restructuring of the Academic Affairs Division of the university to move forward in a post-Katrina environment, chairing development of Quality Enhancement Plan that was approved by SACS without any changes in March 2006, and training of numerous faculty to move courses online before beginning of AY 2006-07.  Huge variety of tasks has been accomplished to keep university functioning in the aftermath of natural disaster.
  • Loyola University New Orleans (August 1994 – August 2005). Professor of Management; Stanford H. Rosenthal Distinguished Professor of Risk, Insurance and Entrepreneurship. Classes taught at the undergraduate level include Business Policy & Strategy, Small and New Venture Development, Business Plan Development, Management and Organizational Behavior, Strategy and the Environment, and Contemporary Managerial Decision-Making. Classes taught at the graduate level include Individual and Corporate Entrepreneurship, Leadership and Personal Relations, Corporate Strategy and the Environment, Business Policy and Strategy (MBA capstone), and Strategic Quality Management (capstone for Master of Quality Management program). International classes taught include Leadership in a Global Environment and The Economic and Financial Integration of Europe during annual Summer Study Abroad programs in Louvain-la-neuve , Belgium .
    • (August 2004 – 2005). Associate Dean , College of Business Administration . Responsible for graduate programs, international student exchange and study abroad programs. Duties include providing academic leadership for the MBA program by chairing the MBA Curriculum Committee and the MBA Admissions and Policy Committee. Other duties are coordinating the advising of MBA students, providing assessment oversight for the MBA program, working with the Coordinator of Graduate Programs in advertising and recruiting students for the MBA program, and representing the College's MBA program at Loyola's Graduate Council and JEBNET. International program duties include coordinating course offerings and enrollment in study abroad programs, developing new study abroad options for students, enhancing the assessment program for study abroad and semester exchange programs, and coordinating programs with partner schools.
    • (August 2003-2004) University Ombudsperson . Assisted staff and faculty in finding assistance for issues not otherwise handled by the university
    • (August 1998 – August 2003). Area Chair-Management. Management area included twelve faculty members from Management, International Business, and Legal Studies. Performed faculty evaluations; conducted course and curriculum reviews; led planning and scheduling; coordinated all administrative requirements for the area.
  • University of Wollongong (Jan. 1994 - July 1994) Visiting Lecturer, Department of Management, Wollongong, Australia. Taught MBA class in Competitive Analysis & Strategy to a class of fifty-three students representing thirteen different countries. Lectured in Management for Professionals, a class primarily for engineering students which was designed in conjunction with the College of Engineering.

  • Wachovia Bank of Georgia (1987-1989), Assistant Vice President. Private banker to high-income, high-net worth individuals. Originated loans, structured investments, set up new venture financing, mortgages, international transactions. Clients included executive officers of large firms, successful entrepreneurs, and other professionals. Atlanta, Georgia.
  • Square D Company (1985-1986) Credits and Returns Coordinator. Southeastern Headquarters. Checked validity of requests for credit/return and traced discrepancies to point of origin as part of total quality program within the organization. Administered customer rebate program, conducted training. Atlanta, Georgia.
  • Wheat, First Securities, Inc. (1984-1985) Sales Assistant to Vice President of Institutional Sales. Administrative Assistant to Chief Financial Officer during period of divestiture of mortgage subsidiary and reorganization of finance area. Richmond, Virginia.
  • Central Builders, Inc. (1964-1972) Office Manager. Developed program for OSHA compliance. Prepared competitive bids for utility construction projects. Directed project cost accounting, payroll, purchasing and expediting, insurance programs, and office personnel. Coordinated work on government contracts with local, state, and federal agencies. Worked with organization from startup through the first eight years of development. Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

JOINT ACADEMIC/BUSINESS ACTIVITIES:

  • Team Leader, Family Business Project - Strengthening Louisiana 's Internationalization Efforts in a New World of Uncertainty and Risk (2002-04). Funded by U.S. Department of Education. Consortium of the College of Business Administration and New Orleans business partners including the World Trade Center of New Orleans and MetroVision Economic Development Partnership. Project goal was to strengthen the International Business programs of the College through academic alliances, enhanced educational programs, and research initiatives. Focus was on strategies to reverse the negative impact of environmental forces and profit from favorable emerging opportunities in the region.
  • Certificate Program in Music Business Entrepreneurship (2001-02). One of team that wrote proposal which was awarded $50,000 entrepreneurship grant from Coleman Foundation. Participated as instructor in filmed classes and development of written materials that accompanied course. This is a new program that is currently being readied for offering to individuals in the music business in the U.S.
  • Project Leader, Banking Reform - Venture Capital Analysis. Louisiana Alliance/Programa Presidencial de Inversion (Alianzas) (2000-02). Member in consortium of Louisiana universities that participated in USAID project coordinated through MetroVision of New Orleans. The objectives of the venture capital component of the project were: (1) provide an analysis of the extent to which venture capital is available to entrepreneurs in Honduras , (2) identify impediments to new entrepreneurial ventures and growing firms, and (3) make recommendations that would result in additional funding for new ventures and growing ventures.
  • Director, Globalization of Small Businesses in the Oil and Gas Industry (1997). Workshop funded by Louisiana Education Quality SF Small Business Internationalization Grant. Representatives of the major oil producers, successful entrepreneurs in oil and gas service companies, and professionals working with small businesses servicing the oil and gas industry joined to present a one day workshop for firms seeking support and information on globalization. May 1997.
  • Leader, Task Force for Small Business Internationalization (1995). One of five task forces that made up the Louisiana-Mexico Business Partnership Program for Research and Leadership Development. Project funded by the United States Department of Education to strengthen both (1) business opportunities with Mexico within the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and (2) international business programs of higher education. First, an executive seminar for academic, public and private leaders was presented during the three weeks leading up to the Alianzas conference in April, 1995. Second, the Alianzas conference, where several hundred participants from government, business, and education in Latin America and the United States joined to explore opportunities presented by NAFTA, was held at the World Trade Center in New Orleans.
  • NationsBank (1992). Developed proprietary strategic management case and other materials for use in executive development training sessions, Fall 1991 - Spring 1992.

Research Interests

FUNDED RESEARCH:

  • "Inbound Technology Transfer to Louisiana Firms: Development of Conceptual Frameworks for Teaching International Strategy Implementation and Public Policy Recommendations", with five other members of the Loyola University New Orleans College of Business Administration faculty. Study of inbound technology transfer. Results of study will include journal articles, teaching tools, and public policy recommendations for state and local organizations. Funded by the Louisiana State Board of Regents. Project began in June 1999 and will continue through December, 2000.
  • "Corporate Environmental Policies: A Pilot Study," Cecily A. Raiborn and Brenda E. Joyner. Study of corporate policy with respect to environmental management. Research on environmental management systems and ISO 14000 certification programs. Funded by Loyola University New Orleans Research Grant for academic year 1999-2000. Scheduled completion December, 2000.
  • "Success for Oil Industry Service Companies during a Decade of Change," Joseph Ganitsky, Brenda E. Joyner, and Jing Li. Industry-specific study to identify key success factors for oil industry service firms going public during the period 1986-1996. Partially funded by grant from USDOE, 1997. Database developed from IPOs continues to provide data for publications.
  • "Professional Divers of New Orleans: A Case Study" Personal interviews and library research on the company and other service companies within the oil and gas industry. This case was completed in conjunction with a technical note on underwater diving written by a graduate student under my direction. Funded by State of Louisiana Education Quality Fund grant for Small Business Internationalization, 1997.
  • "Areas of Special Concern for Women Starting New Ventures," Brenda E. Joyner, Deborah Walker and Cecily Raiborn. Research on criteria used by female entrepreneurs to identify and evaluate new venture opportunities. Resulted in two published papers. Jan. 1996 - July 1997. Funded by Loyola University Research Grant.
  • "The State of Entrepreneurship in Louisiana," Michael Pearson and Brenda E. Joyner. Large scale survey of entrepreneurs within Louisiana to ascertain the composition of entrepreneurial activity in the region. Identification of educational needs was focus of the study. Data from this survey has been used in design of entrepreneurial education program at Loyola University. Funded by Loyola University Research Grant, Spring 1996.

Directed graduate students in performing a feasibility analysis and developing a business plan for day-care center that provides services for lower income families who work in the central business district of New Orleans.   • Global Startups, with Joseph Ganitsky. Topics include building global venture teams, bridging cultural differences, securing resources, finding financing, managing diverse human resources, identifying and exploiting the global value chain. Textbook targeted to graduate academic classes in both international and entrepreneurship programs.

HONORS AND AWARDS

  • Certificate of Distinction for Excellence in Research in Entrepreneurship and Independent Business, given by the Academy of Management and the National Federation for Independent Businesses at the annual meeting of the Academy of Management, August 1997, for dissertation, "Key Tasks and Behaviors of Founding Entrepreneurs During New Venture Creation and Development". Judges included academics in the area of Entrepreneurship and New Venture Development from some of the most successful entrepreneurship programs in the nation along with top executives of independent businesses.
  • Outstanding Research Award 1999-2000. Awarded each year by the faculty of the College of Business Administration, Loyola University New Orleans, to the faculty member who has excelled most in the area of research during the year.
